From September 7, 2024 to February 16, 2025, the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow presents Igor Shelkovsky’s exhibition Heavenly City. The Artist’s Studio.
Igor Shelkovsky is a prominent contemporary artist and sculptor, a key figure in both Russian and international art. From 1979 to 1986, he was the founder and editor of the legendary underground art journal A–Ya.
This major retrospective at MAMM spans nearly 70 years of Shelkovsky’s creative practice — from the 1960s–1970s to the present day. The exhibition features over 600 works, including sculptures, paintings, and graphic pieces.
A central conceptual element of the show is the reconstruction of Shelkovsky’s studio, which the artist agreed to relocate to the museum’s halls for the duration of the exhibition.
This project offers a unique opportunity to step inside a space usually hidden from public view — the private, working studio of the artist, typically accessible only to a close circle of visitors.
For Shelkovsky, the studio is his opus magnum — a total work of art, in constant evolution. As he notes, each new studio marks the beginning of a new stage in his artistic development.
Nothing in his workspace is accidental: every object has its place, arranged according to the internal dramaturgy of the space — and many elements of the studio’s design were conceived and built by the artist himself.
The choice of white is also deliberate, evoking both the white-stone churches of Russia and Malevich’s cosmic void.
In this “heavenly city,” this garden-city, Shelkovsky constructs a model of the universe — one founded on the universal laws of nature and the harmony of the world.
